Mammis Apartments – Travel, discover, visit Nisyros
The island of Nisyros is a volcanic island, which gives it a very special character. It has a circular form with a diameter of about 10 kilometers and has approximately 900 inhabitants. Nisyros offers wonderful landscapes and walking paths, beautiful beaches and a clear sea, old churches and monasteries with a rich history and lovely Greek villages with nice restaurants and bars. In sum, Nisyros is a wonderful island on which to enjoy your holiday and well worth a visit. Nisyros has not been destroyed by mass tourism and is an ideal destination for those who wish a quiet vacation experiencing Greece as it really is, full of tradition and authentic people.
With about 100 inhabitants, the small harbour village of Pali is very peaceful and picturesque. At the edge of the harbour you will find 5 restaurants, which are all open during the entire day. The village has two mini markets where basic necessities can be bought as well as a bakery. Pali is known for its beautiful ‘family’ beach – not busy, but lively – with soft sand, shade and a gradually declining sea, ideal for families with children.
Next to Pali the island has three other villages. Mandraki is the capital of the island. With its many narrow streets, lovely squares, little shops and café’s, Mandraki is a charming village in which you still can experience the Greek way of life. The two small villages Nikia and Emborios are located high in the mountains on the road to the volcano. From these villages the view of the crater of the volcano and the Aegean Sea is spectacular.
According to scientists the volcano is an ‘active sleeping’ one. The last eruption was 15.000 years ago. It has more than twenty craters, of which five are clearly visible. The biggest crater is called Stefanos, which you can enter by foot.
Nisyros has several beaches. The dark sand or black volcanic stones and the deep blue waters makes the beaches of Nisyros very unique. The beaches of the island are not many, but each one has it’s own character. The beach of Pali is a family beach, in Mandraki there are two beaches: the beach at Aghios Savvas and Chochlaki beach with big black pevels. About 5 km after Pali the beaches of Lies and Pachia Ammos are ideal for people who looks for complete remote or nudist beaches.
The Volcanological museum at Nikia and the Archaeological museum in Mandraki are both very interesting and worth paying a visit.
